FACES OF GROUND ZERO is a work-in-progress for a 60 minute broadcast documentary that captures the impact of art wrought out of tragedy. It is based on the creation and exhibition of acclaimed New York photographer Joe McNally’s monumental portraits of people from all walks of life caught in the World Trade Center disaster 9/11. Joe was inspired by the heroism of ordinary people in the face of catastrophe. He found his voice in life-size, full length Polaroid photography. The film, set in the exhibition with flashbacks to the studio, presents several perspectives: it goes behind the scenes for an intimate view of a master photographer at work; it brings to life a number of Joe’s subjects and their gripping stories; it evokes emotions visitors felt going through the exhibit. This deeply moving film projects the ennobling spirit that arose from the defining event of our time – a spirit eclipsed in the wake of events since.
